Barbaresco Marinacci

Wine friends,

I love working with Manuel Marinacci.

His classic and delicious Piedmont wines have fueled this Open Tuesday program since our first set of offers in the spring of 2022. (That 2017 Marinacci Barbaresco is still one of my all-time favorites).

In fact, Manuel’s small winery in San Rocco Seno d’Elvio (Barbaresco) was one of the first places I visited while planning the first lineup of Open Tuesday wines.

The Marinacci wines also help me tell the story of Open Tuesday’s value proposition.

Other online retailers in the U.S. are now selling Marinacci’s 2018 Barbaresco for around $60, before taxes and shipping.

Last fall, we sold the 2019, which is a better vintage than 2018, for $44! (With $5 added later to cover shipping and IVA).

Your Marinacci 2019 Barbaresco bottles were shipped directly from Italy, by air, in a temperature controlled environment. Just weeks prior to being delivered, those bottles were in Manuel Marinacci’s cellar. Wine provenance doesn’t get any better than that.

I like today’s 2020 Marinacci Barbaresco just as much as his stellar 2019, and I think it’s a step up from that benchmark 2017 we all loved.

Manuel’s 2021 Barbera is slightly juicier and more persistent than the 2020, while his new 2023 Dolcetto is more structured and muscular than the 2022.

Could Manuel be improving with each passing vintage?

Manuel Marinacci - 2020 Barbaresco Rocche Massalupo

Manuel’s 2020 Barbaresco is a classically styled, stately Nebbiolo-based red wine from the renowned Massalupo vineyard in San Rocco Seno d’Elvio. It shows notes of underbrush and leather alongside crunchy red fruit and firm, integrated tannins. Give this wine time in the bottle or air over the course of a few nights to allow it to truly shine. While it’s expressive right now, this wine can also age and evolve in your cellar for up to 15-20 years.

Manuel Marinacci - 2021 Barbera d’Alba

The 2021 Marinacci Barbera is a juicy-yet-structured red wine that’s versatile at the table and an absolute joy to drink. The dark berry fruit, stone, and minty notes blend together seamlessly. This wine is incredibly persistent and complete for such a (relatively) inexpensive Barbera. It pairs beautifully with anything from burgers to steaks to antipasto at aperitivo time

Manuel Marinacci - 2023 Dolcetto d’Alba

Manuel’s 2023 Dolcetto is a vibrant red wine that shows expressive brambly dark berry fruit, a floral nose, and just the right amount of savory earthiness. It’s balanced, muscular, and hearty, with a firm tannic structure. This is the third vintage of Marinacci’s Dolcetto that we’ve offered. It’s always a sneaky great wine, and a terrific value, that tends to make members wish they had stashed away a few more bottles. Check out the prices elsewhere.

Here’s Manuel Marinacci on the map of northern Italy.

For pairings, Manuel always says he prefers to drink his Barbaresco with “BARBECUE!!!” A more conventional pairing would be risotto ai funghi porcini (risotto with porcini mushrooms), which is a great pick for vegetarians. To me, this Barbaresco is a perfect wine to bring to an Italian restaurant. Just pay the corkage fee and order a steak.

For the Dolcetto, Manuel suggests pizza or a salumi and cheese antipasto dish. Manuel’s Barbera is a very versatile food wine. I wouldn’t hesitate to open it with a chicken-based dish or eggplant parmesan. Apart from Rossese, Barbera is my favorite Italian wine to drink with a burger.

Open Tuesday has the lowest price in the U.S. on Manuel’s Barbaresco.

We are also the only retailer in the world already selling the just-released 2020 Marinacci Barbaresco.

Happy Tuesday,

Chris

How it works:

After clicking one of the links above, you’ll be able to request 1-12 bottles. Actually, that’s all you have to do!

About a week later, when we close the offer, you’ll get an email confirming how many bottles we allocated to your account. We will charge you when the wines are allocated.

We’ll do our best to allocate all the bottles you request. When there are more requests than bottles available, we’ll allocate one bottle to all requesting members before allocating a second bottle to anyone. We want as many members as possible to try these wines.

This is the ninth offer of our 2024 fall season. In September and October, we’re sending 18 wine offers to Open Tuesday list members.

We ship in increments of 12. With 18 offers this season, there should be plenty of chances to get to 12, 24, or 36.

If you don’t have an increment of 12 at the end of this fall season, we can hold your wines until the spring offer season.

Wines allocated in the fall will ship in November for $5 per bottle (if you have an increment of 12.) This is about the same as the price to ship coast-to-coast within the U.S. – but our wines come directly from Italy.

Once your payment method is on file, you can make future requests with just a few clicks from the offer email. If you don’t have a card on file, you can add one during your first order. Your personal financial information is protected by Stripe.
