Barolo Debut - Diego Rivetti

(Sign up to receive Open Tuesday offers like this one by text or by email.)

Wine friends,

I’ve been hyping Diego Rivetti’s debut Barolo for a few seasons now. Well, it’s finally available today, and the wine is stunning.

At around $42, it’s also exceptionally well-priced, especially for a micro batch Barolo sourced from prime real estate in Serralunga d’Alba.

The second wine on offer today is the latest release of Diego’s “piccolo Barolo” Langhe Nebbiolo, the 2022. I won’t say it’s a better wine than the stellar 2021 we offered last year, but it’s at least as good, with more fruit in evidence at this early stage.

Lastly, for those who enjoyed Diego’s 2021 or 2022 Roero Arneis Criculin, today’s 2023 is…shockingly, better still. There’s more richness, more complexity, and more length. I was stunned when I tasted it this summer. (So was Manuel Marinacci, who tasted with us.) I’m not sure Diego can make a better Arneis than this 2023 Criculin.

Diego Rivetti - 2020 Barolo di Serralunga d’Alba

Diego Rivetti’s 2020 Barolo is a medium- to full-bodied prodigious red wine made with grapes sourced from an enviable position in Serralunga d’Alba (see map below). This 2020 shows classic Barolo notes such as cherry, cedar, leather, and mushrooms. The wine is focused, energetic, and elegant. It will age and improve in good cellar conditions for the next 15-20 years.

Open Tuesday is the only retailer outside of Italy with access to this special wine.

Diego Rivetti - 2023 Roero Arneis Criculin

Diego Rivetti’s 2023 Criculin is a medium-bodied white wine that’s packed with rich fruit character. The wine shows vibrant pear and melon notes, alongside subtle hints of nutmeg and hazelnut. You simply don’t come across white wines this fresh and this rich for such a low price. This wine is otherwise not available outside of Italy.

Diego Rivetti - 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo

Diego Rivetti’s 2022 Nebbiolo is a medium-bodied classically-styled red wine that offers crisp cherry fruit and a firm core, with plenty of grip and length. As the wine opens up, it shows subtle notes of anise, orange peel, and even clay. As you can see here, our price is currently the lowest anywhere in the world. This wine will be ready to drink when it arrives on your doorstep in late November-early December.

Take a look at this photo:

Diego’s 2022 Nebbiolo comes from the vineyard shaded yellow. The 2020 Rivetti Barolo is sourced from the vineyard shaded red, which (you probably noticed) sits adjacent to some of Barolo’s most famous sites.

Here’s Diego Rivetti on the map of Northwestern Italy. Diego makes only about twelve thousand bottles of wine a year.

Diego’s Roero Arneis pairs beautifully with goat cheese, white fish, or chicken. Staying local, risotto al finocchio (fennel risotto) would be a nice vegetarian option. Another good Piemontese dish would be vitello tonnato (veal served cold in a creamy tuna sauce). The Langhe Nebbiolo works best with game meat, less saucy pork dishes, and pasta with truffles. For the Barolo, I’d go local with tajarin in a ragu sauce, or possibly a hard aged Italian cheese like Grana Padano or Pecorino Romano.

Wines purchased through Open Tuesday will be sent directly from Italy, by air, in a temperature controlled environment. No hot warehouses, and no retail shelves.

Happy Tuesday,

Chris

Receive a $25 credit for every referred member after the purchase of their first bottle.

How it works:

After clicking one of the links above, you’ll be able to request 1-12 bottles. Actually, that’s all you have to do!

About a week later, when we close the offer, you’ll get an email confirming how many bottles we allocated to your account. We will charge you when the wines are allocated.

We’ll do our best to allocate all the bottles you request. When there are more requests than bottles available, we’ll allocate one bottle to all requesting members before allocating a second bottle to anyone. We want as many members as possible to try these wines.

This is the sixth offer of our 2024 fall season. In September and October, we’ll send 18 wine offers to Open Tuesday list members.

We ship in increments of 12. With 18 offers this season, there should be plenty of chances to get to 12, 24, or 36.

If you don’t have an increment of 12 at the end of this fall season, we can hold your wines until the spring offer season.

Wines offered in the fall will ship in November for $5 per bottle (if you have an increment of 12.) This is about the same as the price to ship coast-to-coast within the U.S. – but our wines come directly from Italy.

Once your payment method is on file, you can make future requests with just a few clicks from the offer email. If you don’t have a card on file, you can add one during your first order. Your personal financial information is protected by Stripe.
