I Cacciagalli - 2019 “Aorivola” Falanghina

Beta Offer #6 of 18

Bottom Line Up Front - I Cacciagalli’s “Aorivola” is a biodynamic Falanghina produced at the base of the extinct Roccamonfina volcano in Campania, about 45 minutes north of Naples. Aorivola is a “skin contact” wine, meaning white grape skins and juice were vinified together for a short period - in this case, just 12 hours. As a result, it has a slightly darker color and more tannin structure than most white wines. A precise harvest added good acidity, giving us a wine that’s versatile at the table but also drinkable any time.

Fellow wine geeks,

We were not sure if Cacciagalli would agree to work with us. Their wines sell out in advance every year. All of the Italian wine guides publish gushing reviews. Cacciagalli is also one of the darlings of the Italian natural wine scene. Sommeliers everywhere want to sell these wines in their restaurants.

So why did Cacciagalli ultimately decide to reserve a few bottles for you, the members of the Open Tuesday Wines group? I’ll venture a few educated guesses.

Without a doubt, estate manager Florestano (brother of owner Diana Iannaccone) knows we love Cacciagalli’s wines. When tasting at the winery in January, I noticed that Rob and Alessandro smiled spontaneously after first sipping Aorivola. I also noticed that Florestano smiled back, happy that we were so impressed with his family’s wines.

Florestano also liked hearing that Open Tuesday ships directly to its members. He’s not the only producer who has nightmares about wine sitting too long in an unknown warehouse en route to the wine consumer. Florestano was also pleased to learn that we communicate directly with members about the wines we represent. Too often, he has no idea who ends up telling the wine drinker about Cacciagalli and its wines.

We’re proud to offer you this Aorivola Falanghina from one of the elite wine producers in Campania. This is where Cacciagalli is on the map: i Cacciagalli. You may notice the Roccamonfina volcano regional park just to the west.

Beware, the following pictures may compel you to book a trip to Campania in the near future - especially the pictures of the B&B and the restaurant: https://www.icacciagalli.it/en/winery/

Falanghina is an ancient grape variety (likely from Greece originally) that grows throughout the Campania region. I usually prefer Fiano wines over Falanghina wines, but with Cacciagalli, I can't decide. We hope to offer the “Zagreo” Fiano soon - and perhaps one of the Cacciagalli red wines. We chose this Falanghina first because it’s a wine that will be ready to drink when it arrives at your door in late May-early June.

Aorivola is the name of a nearby frazione (small village) where Cacciagalli made its first wines, in an 1600s underground cellar dug into the tufo (tuff soil.)

Florestano advises that Aorivola pairs beautifully with white meat and more complex fish dishes. Mixed antipasti would be great with Aorivola too. Honestly, when skin contact vinification is done right, as it was here, the resulting wine goes with most foods. Maybe not grilled red meat, though.

How it works:

After clicking one of the blue links above, you’ll be able to request 1-12 bottles. Actually, that’s all you have to do!

About a week later, when we close the offer, you’ll get an email confirming how many bottles we allocated to your account. We will charge you when the wines are allocated.

We’ll do our best to allocate all the bottles you request. But when there are more requests than bottles available, we’ll allocate one bottle to all requesting members before allocating a second bottle to anyone. We want as many members as possible to try these wines.

This Cacciagalli Aorivola Falanghina is offer number six of 18 during the spring private beta test. We are sending offers on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday for six straight weeks (starting on 3/29).

We encourage you to ship in increments of 12. With 18 offers in this tranche, there should be plenty of chances to get to 12, 24, or 36. If you don’t have an increment of 12 at the end of the beta test, we will get in touch.

Wines from the beta tranche will ship in late May-early June for $5 per bottle (if you have an increment of 12.) This is about the same as the price to ship coast-to-coast within the U.S. - but our wines come directly from Italy.

Once your payment method is on file, you can make future requests with just a few clicks from the offer email. If you don’t have a card on file, you can add one during your first order. Your personal financial information is protected by Stripe.
