Montalcino Revelation - Castello Tricerchi

Spring 2023 Offer #9: Castello Tricerchi

Tricerchi Castle (completed in 1441)

Wine friends,

I sampled today’s Castello Tricerchi wines for the first time at a special Brunello event in Milan last week. An all-star cast of Brunello producers was pouring wines, including Le Ragnaie, Cupano, Salicutti, Il Marroneto, Podere Le Ripi, and today’s featured producer, Castello Tricerchi.

Not surprisingly, Riccardo Campinoti’s Le Ragnaie wines were in spectacular form, and the 2018 Le Ragnaie Brunello we offered a few weeks ago was drinking beautifully.

The Castello Tricerchi wines were more of a surprise! I knew they were good, but even in this elite group of producers, the wines stood out. What’s even more remarkable is the relatively low price point which, given the quality, is almost unheard of in Montalcino.

Castello Tricerchi - 2021 Rosso di Montalcino

The 2021 Rosso di Montalcino is a delicious medium-bodied red wine with a fruit-forward profile and lots of length. There’s a subtle minerality, but the pretty morello cherry notes speak the loudest in this wine.

After tasting at the Castello Tricerchi table, I returned to Le Ragnaie and asked Riccardo which wines at the event were most similar to his own production style. Riccardo’s answer was Castello Tricerchi. (He also mentioned Il Marroneto, another top-tier Brunello producer.)

Indeed, like Le Ragnaie, Castello Tricerchi’s wines are fresh, persistent, and much more elegant than most Montalcino wines. The difference is that the Tricerchi wines also give you a nice dose of rich red fruit, whereas the Le Ragnaie wines are slightly more delicate.

Here’s Castello Tricerchi on the map of central Italy. Total production is about 65 thousand bottles per year.

The Tricerchi Castle, completed in 1441, dominates the winery property. It’s now the headquarters of the winery and the home of the Tricerchi family’s direct ancestors, the Squarcia family.

Food pairing: Officially, Castello Tricerchi recommends pairing the Brunello with “red meats, seasoned cheeses and game; refined cuisine.” More specifically, owner Tommaso Quercia likes to drink it with a petto di piccione in glassa di amarene (pigeon breast in a black cherry glaze). For the Rosso, Tommaso prefers pici con ragù di cinta (Tuscan pasta with pork ragout from Siena.)

How it works:

After clicking one of the links above, you’ll be able to request 1-12 bottles. Actually, that’s all you have to do!

About a week later, when we close the offer, you’ll get an email confirming how many bottles we allocated to your account. We will charge you when the wines are allocated.

We’ll do our best to allocate all the bottles you request. But when there are more requests than bottles available, we’ll allocate one bottle to all requesting members before allocating a second bottle to anyone. We want as many members as possible to try these wines.

This is the ninth offer of our spring 2023 season.

Through February and March, we are sending offers on Thursday and Sunday, with a recap of the past week’s offers on Tuesday.

We ship in increments of 12. With 18 offers this season, there should be plenty of chances to get to 12, 24, or 36. If you don’t have an increment of 12 at the end of the fall season offers, we can hold your wines until the next offer season – fall 2023.

Wines offered in the spring will ship in April for $5 per bottle (if you have an increment of 12.) This is about the same as the price to ship coast-to-coast within the U.S. – but our wines come directly from Italy.

Once your payment method is on file, you can make future requests with just a few clicks from the offer email. If you don’t have a card on file, you can add one during your first order. Your personal financial information is protected by Stripe.
