Tuesday Re-up and Roero Fix!

(Sign up to receive Open Tuesday offers like this one by text or by email.)

Wine friends,

Today’s re-up opens with the 16th offer of our fall season.

We still have two more great wine opportunities on the way, and there’s plenty of time to fill your cases from previous offers. If you need help selecting, just send me an email.

A few days ago, Rosavica Benotti’s owner and winemaker Ermanno Cordero passed along this irresistible opportunity, giving us access to the last bottles of his premium wine, the 2020 Roero DOCG.

Unlike our Benotti allocations in the spring (2021 Langhe Nebbiolo and 2021 Barbera d’Alba), today’s parcel is quite small. I’ll likely have to close the offer in short order.

Some Italian wine lovers are starting to say a top tier Roero (like this one) can be as good as its Nebbiolo siblings to the south, Barbaresco and Barolo. I think the jury is still out on that argument. But at this price, for a high-end Nebbiolo, why not judge for yourself?

Rosavica Benotti - 2020 Roero DOCG

Rosavica Benotti’s 2020 Roero is an elegant and ageworthy medium-bodied red wine made in Priocca, Roero, just north of Alba, in the Piedmont region. It’s an honest, expressive, and very drinkable Nebbiolo that strikes an ideal balance of juicy fruit and savory earth. The violets, cedar, and bright herbs on the palate are typical for a Roero of this quality. This wine is focused, long, and refreshing.

Open Tuesday has the lowest price in North America for this wine. (The only other online retailer has it for around $40.)

Available Wines (the re-up):

Alessandro Pialli - 2022 Tai Rosso Calbin

Pialli’s Tai Rosso is the rare complex red wine that pairs beautifully with fish dishes, chicken, and spicy foods. Despite low tannins, the abundant ripe fruit and bright acidity result in a balanced wine in the glass. Compared to the 2021 Rosso Calbin many of you ordered last fall, today’s 2022 is slightly darker, with more concentration and structure at this early point in its development.

Le Ragnaie - 2021 Troncone

Le Ragnaie’s 2021 Troncone is a highly drinkable, yet surprisingly substantial, red wine made just outside the Montalcino appellation. This 100 percent Sangiovese shows notes of ashy Tuscan herbs and sour cherry. In 2021, the tannins are gentle, leading to a refreshing mid-palate and close. The Troncone label consistently delivers remarkable quality at this price point, and it may be the best QPR wine sold anywhere in Italy.

Giuseppe Cortese 2021 Langhe Bianco Scapulin

Cortese’s 2021 Langhe Bianco is a Chardonnay-based white that’s vibrant, fresh, and full-bodied. It’s slightly more focused and mineral than the 2020 many of you received in April shipments. The 2021 Scapulin shows hints of apple, lemon, stones, and hazelnut, all singing together in harmony. Is there a more Burgundian white made outside of France?

Giuseppe Cortese 2019 Barbera d’Alba Morassina

The 2019 Cortese Morassina is a structured and savory red wine with plenty of dark fruit and a persistent finish. There’s less overt oak than the 2018 vintage, reflecting a harvest that brought ideal ripeness and, ultimately, pure fruit expression in the glass. This wine is herbal, lightly tannic, and very drinkable. 2019 was not just a banner year for Nebbiolo in the Langhe; Barbera may have fared even better overall. This wine makes a great case for 2019 Barbera.

I Favati - 2021 Fiano di Avellino Pietramara black label

I Favati’s 2021 Fiano black label is a mineral-laced full-flavored dry white wine from the Pietramara vineyard. It’s loaded with typical Fiano flavor notes like spicy herbs, honey, and pear. This wine has a very similar flavor profile to the 2019 Pietramara black label we offered last year. If not for the age factor, it would be next to impossible to tell them apart in a blind tasting.

I Favati - 2015 Cretarossa (Aglianico) Irpina Campi Taurasini

I Favati’s 2015 Cretarossa is a full-bodied aglianico-based red wine that gives you muscle and tannins without sacrificing drinkability. It’s bright and lively, with dark red cherry and pomegranate fruit front, followed by cocoa and anise, all in a steely, firm package. You can open it confidently with a December holiday meal, or lay it down in the cellar for 5-10 more years.

Marco Carpineti - 2015 “Kius” Pas Dosé Brut

Marco Carpineti’s 2015 Pas Dose shows sinewy citrus notes, with a touch of yeast and bright herbs. It’s got plenty of flavor depth and a succulent, persistent finish. As usual, this top-tier white sparkler is focused, dry, and elegant.

How it works:

After clicking one of the links above, you’ll be able to request 1-12 bottles. Actually, that’s all you have to do!

About a week later, when we close the offer, you’ll get an email confirming how many bottles we allocated to your account. We will charge you when the wines are allocated.

We’ll do our best to allocate all the bottles you request. When there are more requests than bottles available, we’ll allocate one bottle to all requesting members before allocating a second bottle to anyone. We want as many members as possible to try these wines.

This is the 16th offer of our 2023 fall season. Through the first week of November, we plan to send offers on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday.

We ship in increments of 12. With 18 offers this season, there should be plenty of chances to get to 12, 24, or 36. If you don’t have an increment of 12 at the end of the fall season offers, we can hold your wines until the next offer season – spring 2023.

Wines offered in the fall will ship in late November-early December for $5 per bottle (if you have an increment of 12.) This is about the same as the price to ship coast-to-coast within the U.S. – but our wines come directly from Italy.

Once your payment method is on file, you can make future requests with just a few clicks from the offer email. If you don’t have a card on file, you can add one during your first order. Your personal financial information is protected by Stripe.
